Laser Vein Therapy Frequently Asked Questions

Laser technology offers a very effective means of treating vascular lesions. The laser has a unique ability to selectively target blood vessels without adversely affecting surrounding tissues. Laser light is specifically absorbed by the hemoglobin in the veins. The vessels are gently heated, causing the vessels to collapse. The body reabsorbs the treated blood vessels during the natural healing process.

Lasers can be used to treat a wide variety of veins, from small, superficial, pink and red vessels on the face to the large, deep, purple and blue veins on the legs. Often Rosacea is improved when treatment of discrete facial veins is added to the laser regime. Lasers can also treat Cherry Angiomas, Hemangiomas, and Port Wine Stains.

Depending upon the severity of the veins, you may require between 1 and 3 laser treatments, spaced 6 weeks apart. The treatment is performed on the existing blood vessels, diminishing or completely eliminating their appearance.

When the hand piece is placed on the skin, it will feel cool and comfortable. When the laser pulse is delivered, you may feel a slight stinging or the sensation of a small rubber-band snapping on the skin. Although no local anesthetic or pain medication is required, you may choose to apply topical anesthetic prior to the treatment.

You may experience some temporary redness, swelling or bruising. This doesn't happen often, and is typically gone within a few hours. Others may experience pigmentary changes in skin color, but these will disappear and return to normal over time. Since laser treatment does not burn or cut the skin in any way, no bandages or compression stockings are necessary. You will be able to do light exercise or activity, but we recommend no vigorous exercise for 24 to 48 hours, depending on the size of the veins treated. After facial vein treatments you can resume all usually activity and exercise.

Some people see immediate results; however, veins can take several weeks to months to be fully reabsorbed after treatment.

Sclerotherapy is the most commonly used method of non-laser vein removal. With Sclerotherapy, saline is injected into the vessel. One to three injections per vein are usually required to effectively treat the vein. Multiple sessions are required. Post-treatment therapy may include wearing support hose (compression stockings) for two days to two weeks following treatment.
