What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a noninvasive body contouring treatment that uses controlled cooling technology to eliminate unwanted fat. The procedure targets specific problem areas and gently freezes fat cells in the area to create a more contoured physique. The frozen fat cells die and are processed by the lymphatic system over time, leaving the body looking slimmer, smoother and more toned.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?

CoolSculpting uses a technology called cryolipolysis to eliminate fat cells. In general, fat cells are more sensitive to cold than other cells of the body. By applying intense cold to a target area, fat cells are damaged and then cleared out by the body over a three month period. The idea that cold can kill fat cells without harming the skin or surrounding tissue was first discovered by Harvard University scientists. After observing that children would develop dimples after eating frozen popsicles, the scientists realized cold therapy had the potential to remove pockets of stubborn fat from adult bodies.

What Are the Benefits of CoolSculpting?

This revolutionary body contouring treatment offers several advantages to patients, such as:

  • No preparation before the procedure
  • No incisions or anesthesia
  • Minimal discomfort during treatment
  • No required downtime prescribed pain medication after treatment
  • Permanent reduction of fat cells
  • Proven efficacy and safety for a wide range of candidates

Am I a Good Candidate for CoolSculpting?

Adult women and men who are at or near their target weight and have localized areas of excess fat may be good candidates for this procedure. Candidates must have realistic expectations and no contraindicating medical conditions. During your consultation with your Vitahl expert, we will discuss your current health status, medical history and aesthetic goals to determine if CoolSculpting is right for you.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

The current applicators are most commonly used for the abdomen, flanks or “love handles,” inner thigh, outer thigh and chin. There are other body areas that can be treated as well, including the back, bra line and buttocks (banana roll).

What Will Happen During My CoolSculpting Treatment?

Your first office visit will start with a one-on-one consultation. Your CoolSculpting provider will discuss the goals you have for your body and examine the specific areas you wish to enhance. We take pride in designing a treatment plan that reflects your unique anatomy and desired results. Based on the information gathered during your consultation, your provider will suggest the optimal treatment areas, identify which applicator will work best for your needs and estimate how many sessions you will need.

During the procedure, you will relax with a gel pad placed over the treatment area. Your provider will attach an applicator connected to the CoolSculpting device to the gel pad, and the area of fat will be drawn into the applicator with suction. The applicator will cool the selected area to a temperature cold enough to kill fat cells without harming the skin or surrounding internal tissues.

What Can I Expect After Treatment? What Is the Recovery Time?

Overall, CoolSculpting has minimal downtime. Patients can return to their normal activities immediately after a treatment without restrictions. Some patients may experience pain or bruising at the treatment site for one to two weeks. Our medical staff is available to all CoolSculpting patients after treatment to answer questions and ensure a smooth recovery.

When Will I See Results?

The results of your CoolSculpting treatment won’t be visible right away. Before you can enjoy your new contours, your body has to process the treated fat. Your lymphatic system will start to metabolize the frozen fat cells within a few weeks and you may begin to see positive changes. The most drastic changes will appear after one to three months. Your body will continue to process fat cells for up to six months after your last CoolSculpting session.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of CoolSculpting treatments required for optimal long-term results depends on various factors unique to you. A single session can remove an average of 20% to 25% of the fat cells in the targeted area. Most patients see noticeable differences after just one treatment, but we recommend at least two rounds of treatment for the best results in all areas. Appointments are scheduled approximately two months apart. Our CoolSculpting specialists will create a treatment plan that gives you the best chance of achieving the results you want.

How Long Will My Results Last?

With a healthy lifestyle, your CoolSculpting results can last indefinitely. Maintaining a regular diet and exercise routine will sustain, and may even enhance, your improvements. Many people say they feel inspired to make healthier lifestyle choices after seeing their CoolSculpting results. If you do gain weight after CoolSculpting, the fat cells that remain in your body can swell and change your figure. Any fat you gain may be distributed evenly around your body, rather than reforming the treated region. Additional CoolSculpting sessions can be an option in this case.

CoolSculpting FAQs

Is There Anything I Need to Do Before a CoolSculpting Treatment?

No special preparation is required before a CoolSculpting session. You may wish to wear soft, comfortable clothing and bring entertainment to pass the time during your treatment. Movement will be limited, so we recommend relaxed activities like reading a book, listening to a podcast or streaming your favorite TV show. Avoiding anti-inflammatories such as aspirin in the week before the procedure will help reduce the risk of bruising.

How Long Does a CoolSculpting Treatment Take?

CoolSculpting at Vitahl is customized to fit each individual patient’s needs. Most treatments are in the range of one to four hours. Your medical provider will give you a more accurate estimate of the expected timeframe for your treatment after your in-person consultation.

What Cannot Be Treated With CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting focuses on the reduction of subcutaneous fat — the “pinchable” fat that sits just under the skin’s surface. The fat freezing technology can’t reach visceral fat, which is located much deeper in the body. It also has no effect on muscle tone and mass, stretch marks or cellulite.

How Does CoolSculpting Feel? Does It Hurt?

CoolSculpting is generally very comfortable. Most patients describe that they feel a mild stinging sensation as the cold is initiated, but after five to 10 minutes, the treatment area is numb and comfortable. At the end of the treatment, a small massage will be completed to break down even more fat. Some patients describe the massage as slightly uncomfortable but overall very tolerable.

Is CoolSculpting Safe?

The FDA first cleared CoolSculpting in 2010. The technology has been analyzed in controlled clinical studies and described in numerous clinical publications. It is a safe, well-tolerated and effective fat reduction treatment. The best way to minimize CoolSculpting risks is to select a skilled and experienced provider.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Side effects may include redness, firmness, bruising, tingling, swelling, tenderness, skin sensitivity, numbness. These effects are normal reactions to the treatment and should resolve on their own within days or weeks. We are available to address your concerns should any arise after treatment.

Can CoolSculpting Help Me Lose Weight?

Think of CoolSculpting as the final step in a weight loss plan. It is not made to treat obesity. Instead, it is designed to help people who are already close to their body goals get rid of fat in some more stubborn areas. CoolSculpting refines your shape so you can fully appreciate the results of your hard work through diet and exercise.

How Many Applicators Will I Need?

CoolSculpting treatments at Vitahl are customized to fit the patient, so your exact number of applicators will be determined at the consultation. In general, four to eight applicators are needed to treat the abdomen and flanks. One to three applicators may be needed to treat the chin. The inner thighs are typically treated with one to two applicator per side. Many areas and combinations of applicators are possible.

How Does CoolSculpting Compare to Liposuction?

CoolSculpting and liposuction are both designed to permanently eliminate localized fat and can both achieve desirable results, but liposuction is a surgical procedure that involves incisions, anesthesia and downtime. CoolSculpting, on the other hand, is completely noninvasive and requires little, if any, recovery time.

How Does CoolSculpting Compare to Other Noninvasive Body Contouring Treatments?

Body contouring procedures are increasingly popular and there are many options to choose from. Some achieve fat reduction with radiofrequency energy  or ultrasound. Others, like TruSculpt Flex, focus on muscle building instead of fat reduction.
