BroadBand Light (BBL) Therapy Explained: Benefits, Downtime & Who It’s For
While we offer many treatments to refresh the skin and treat sun damage and wrinkles, BBL® HERO™ offers something different than all of them. This device uses pulses of light energy to even out the complexion and give your skin a new glow. It takes the technology of intense pulsed light a step further with more effective results and more comfortable treatments.
At VITAHL, we are known throughout the community for using the best technology available, and we have a staff of physicians, nurses, laser specialists and aestheticians who all work together to make sure your experience and your results are exceptional.
How Does BBL Impact the Skin?
BroadBand Light™, or BBL, has many benefits for the appearance of the skin, treating red and brown discoloration and helping the skin to be more even in tone. However, these changes are more than just on the surface of the skin. A study done in 2013 showed that after a BBL treatment, 1,293 genes shifted their expression to more closely resemble youthful skin.
Rejuvenated genres are more adept at repairing UV damage and producing the structural proteins that keep it firm. BBL provides long-term benefits for the skin, while also addressing surface-level aesthetic concerns.
BBL vs. IPL vs. Laser
When you search for light-based skin treatments, these are the three technologies that you will likely find. Sometimes these terms are used interchangeably, but there are substantial differences between them.
Intense pulsed light, or IPL, was the original broad-spectrum light technology for the skin. While IPL provides benefits for skin tone and texture, BBL improves upon the technology with a wider selection of wavelength filters, more power and more consistency. BBL is the next generation of the same concept of technology.
A laser skin treatment uses a single wavelength of light rather than the broad spectrum of IPL and BBL. This greater precision makes it suitable for tasks like resurfacing and hair removal. Laser technology can either be ablative, meaning it removes the outer layers of skin, or non-ablative, meaning it uses heat energy to stimulate renewal without removing tissue.
What Makes BBL HERO Different?
Speed and Power
BBL HERO delivers 4x the speed and 3x the peak power of standard IPL devices. Where older technology might pulse every 10 milliseconds, BBL HERO fires every 3 milliseconds. A full-face session that may have taken 30 minutes or more can be completed in roughly 15–20 minutes using this device.
Comfort
The system also delivers 2x the cooling capacity of its predecessors. Cooling protects the skin’s surface while light energy does its work underneath, which keeps the treatment comfortable and reduces the risk of unwanted thermal effects. The sensation is warm rather than sharp and painful.
Versatility
BBL HERO is equipped with 9 interchangeable wavelength filters, all housed in a single handpiece. Your provider can swap filters mid-session, targeting brown pigment with one wavelength and vascular redness with another, without pausing to switch devices.
What Can BBL Treat?
- Sun Damage and Age Spots: BBL targets melanin deposits that form from years of UV exposure. The light energy heats and fragments these deposits so your body can clear them naturally over the following days and weeks.
- Redness and Rosacea: Light energy is absorbed by hemoglobin in dilated blood vessels, which causes them to constrict and fade. Over a series of treatments, visible capillaries and general facial redness can be reduced using the BBL device.
- Uneven Skin Pigmentation: Hormonal shifts, post-inflammatory marks and accumulated sun exposure can leave the skin looking blotchy. BBL addresses pigment irregularities at their source, treating blotchy skin from sun exposure or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
- Fine Lines and Skin Laxity: By stimulating collagen and elastin production, BBL gradually improves the firmness and smoothness of the skin.
- Acne: BBL’s blue light filter targets the bacteria responsible for inflammatory breakouts. It can be used as a standalone acne treatment or combined with other approaches, depending on the severity and type of acne.
Who Is a Good Candidate for BBL?
BBL can be used for a wide range of ages and skin concerns, from patients in their 20s looking to address early sun damage to those in their 60s targeting accumulated pigmentation and redness. It works best on lighter to medium skin tones (classified as Fitzpatrick types I through IV).
BBL may not be for everyone. Patients who have active infections or open wounds in the treatment area should wait for the skin to heal before scheduling a BBL session. If you are taking photosensitizing medications such as certain antibiotics, retinoids or certain acne treatments, we may have you pause them for a short amount of time before or after your treatment. Those with a history of keloid scarring or autoimmune conditions should also discuss their medical history thoroughly during the consultation.
At VITAHL, every treatment plan begins with a one-on-one consultation. We review your medical history and evaluate your skin before recommending the next steps.
What to Expect During and After BBL
The Treatment Itself
An ultrasound gel is applied to the treatment area. You’ll wear protective eyewear throughout the session. The BBL HERO handpiece glides across the skin in steady passes, delivering pulses of light. Most patients describe the feeling as a warm snap, similar to a rubber band lightly flicking the skin. A full face session at VITAHL typically takes about 30-4515–20 minutes in office.
Downtime and Recovery
One of BBL HERO’s biggest advantages is that there is little to no downtime. You may have some redness for a few hours afterward, similar to a mild sunburn. Over the next three to seven days, treated pigment spots will darken before flaking off on their own. This is a normal part of the process and a sign that the treatment is working. For a more detailed recovery timeline, visit our BBL treatment page.
When You’ll See Results
Noticeable improvement in skin tone and overall clarity typically appears within two to three weeks as the darkened pigment sheds and new collagen production picks up. Most patients see their best results after a series of treatments spaced a few weeks apart. After completing the initial series, maintenance treatments help sustain the improvements and continue building on the long-term anti-aging benefits provided by this treatment.
How Often Should You Get BBL?
The Corrective Phase
If you are coming in with visible sun damage or uneven skin pigmentation, the first round of treatments focuses on clearing up existing concerns. This typically involves three to five sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Each of these sessions will build on the last, and results are cumulative. The number of treatments in your series may be different based on the severity of your concerns.
The Maintenance Phase
Once you have corrected sun damage and uneven pigmentation, the focus can shift to maintaining your skin. This can be done with treatments spread out as far as once per year. Consistency can keep your skin more youthful and address small changes in skin quality from yearly sun exposure.
When Is the Best Time to Get a BBL Treatment?
BBL is gentle enough to be performed year-round, even during summer, but many patients choose to schedule this treatment during cooler months when it is easier to avoid UV exposure and keep the skin protected. UV exposure can increase the risk of pigment changes after BBL and interfere with the healing process and results.
During fall and winter, most people naturally spend less time in direct sunlight. This timing can also allow you to have smoother, clearer skin by the spring and summer season, and gives you a chance to recover from the year’s sun damage. If you decide to have this treatment in the warmer months, just be sure to protect your skin before and after your treatment. Wear sunscreen even when you plan to stay indoors, and use protective clothing when outside, like hats and sunglasses.
How Much Does BBL Cost?
The cost of BBL will depend on the size of your treatment area and the number of sessions in your series. It can also change based on whether you are combining BBL with other treatments. We customize each treatment plan and give you an accurate estimate during your consultation.
Can BBL Be Combined With Other Treatments?
BBL is helpful for pigment and vascular concerns, but sometimes our patients want more than one type of correction. To address skin laxity, pore size, acne scars and overall texture, we may recommend pairing BBL with additional treatments such as MOXI laser rejuvenation, microneedling, Secret RF or chemical peels. Your provider will map out the right combination during your consultation based on your goals and your skin’s current condition.
